Delivery proof packaging: what survives the third party app

Venting, sealing and stacking choices that keep food arriving the way it left your kitchen.

Quick answer

Food fails in delivery for three reasons: steam, leaks and crushing. Vent anything fried, seal anything wet with a tamper evident sticker, and pack so that flat, rigid containers sit at the bottom of the bag. Those three habits fix most one star reviews about soggy or spilled food.

Steam is the enemy of anything crispy

Fries, fried chicken, tempura and anything with a crust steam themselves soft inside a sealed box within ten minutes. Use vented clamshells or add a vented lid, and never put hot fried items in the same container as sauce or rice. Kraft paper bags breathe better than poly bags for fried food, and a paper liner in the box soaks up what the vents miss.

Leaks come from the lid, not the container

Soups, curries and sauces leak at the lid seam. Use deli containers or microwavable round containers with a true snap lid, fill them no more than three quarters, and put sauces in portion cups with their own lids. For anything liquid, a strip of tape or a sticker across the lid costs a fraction of a cent and stops the lid lifting in the bag.

Seal the bag

Tamper evident seals are now expected by delivery customers and required by several platforms. A printed sticker seal across the bag fold does two jobs: it proves the order was not opened, and it is a free spot for your logo. Order them with your custom printing and they pay for themselves in trust.

Stack heavy, flat and rigid at the bottom

Pack rigid containers first, soft items on top, drinks in a carrier beside the bag rather than inside it. Rectangular containers stack more reliably than round ones. If you sell a lot of combos, consider a two compartment or three compartment container so one box replaces three loose ones.

Drinks need carriers

A four cup carrier costs pennies and prevents the most common delivery disaster: a cup tipping and soaking everything else. Match dome lids to cold cups and sip lids to hot cups; a mismatched lid is a spill waiting for a speed bump.

Test it the way a driver treats it

Pack an order, put it in a car, drive around the block twice, then open it. Anything that moved, leaked or steamed is a packaging problem you can fix before a customer finds it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best container for fried food delivery?

A vented clamshell or a container with a vented lid, packed in a paper bag. Keep sauces separate in lidded portion cups so steam and moisture do not reach the crust.

Do I need tamper evident seals?

Several delivery platforms require them and customers expect them. A printed sticker seal across the bag fold proves the order was untouched and doubles as branding.

How do I stop soup from leaking in delivery?

Use a container with a true snap lid, fill to three quarters, and tape or seal the lid. Deli containers and round microwavable containers with matching lids are the usual choice.
